The Honeymoon

“Oooh two whole weeks in the sunshine, I can’t wait.” I threw the last of my clothes into the suitcase and sat on it, bouncing up and down to make the edges meet. “Here, can you reach between my legs and grab the zip Joe?”

He sniggered loudly. “We’re going on our honeymoon and you think it’s only the zip I’m going to grab Mave!”

I thumped him on the arm. “Don’t be impatient, you’re like a naughty schoolboy sometimes.” I waited for him to complete the task. “Only sometimes!” he laughed as he disappeared downstairs with the cases.

We’d scoured endless brochures and had eventually plumped for an apartment in a little place called Icmeler in Turkey. The brochure had described it as an Oasis of Tranquillity, Intimacy and Romance. Learning by my past mistakes, I’d packed my suitcase very carefully with enough Primark thongs for the entire two weeks and had spent last night snipping the size 18-20 labels out. Several years of experience with them, in many colours, different materials and prices, had definitely not altered the disparity in sizing, so I was still cladding my ample backside in the biggest size they had.

These beaut’s were not going to be the subject of an accidental spillage in the middle of Manchester airport. I’d promised Joe that this was going to be a Honeymoon without incident.

“Do you think Dad’s going to be okay whilst we’re away, I hate the idea of leaving him, he’s getting more and more frail and forgetful.”

Joe looked at me with a modicum of sympathy. “Connie is more than capable of looking after him Mave, she’ll be keeping an eye on him and she won’t let him get away with anything, he’ll be fine.”

I nodded. Poor Connie, she wouldn’t know what had hit her.
